Quotes
are used regularly to stimulate thinking or to make a point more powerfully. Only quotes that have struck me as powerful are used in the Newsletter or website.

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” - Charles Darwin

“You can get anything you want out of life if you’re prepared to help enough other people to get what they want.” Zig Ziglar

“Our attitude toward life determines life's attitude towards us” -Earl Nightingale

Barney’s View.
Every now and then, I need to get on my high horse about something so I have a short rant in the Newsletter! This one is and always has been fundamental to my beliefs:

Everybody needs training because it accelerates development, but some employers resent the cost and the time it takes.

“What”, they say, “if we train these people and they leave?”

My response is, “What if you don’t train them and they stay?”

Ongoing training is crucial to any development, but it’s your responsibility to make sure it happens and to make sure you get something out of it. Nobody else can do it for you.

Getting through
Practical hints to improve communication in all its forms.
Between 70% and 95% of all communication - depending on which “research” you read - is non-verbal.
There are many practical techniques that you can use to control this aspect of your communication and you get plenty of them here.

To appear more authoritative, wear black.

To appear more commanding, keep your hands out of your pockets.

Presents to help present.
Tips and techniques aimed at work-based communication, although of course equally applicable to all aspects of your life
.

“Tell me and I hear. Show me and I observe. Involve me and I understand.”

People learn and retain much more if they are actively involved in some way. Try making sure at your next presentation that you get everyone to join in somehow. That could be by asking them a question or giving an answer. Involve everyone.

Try it next time you’re in a group of people. Make sure everyone is included and just note how the dynamic of the group changes.

Loose Change
Suggestions, hints and tips to help you make change happen

People accept change more willingly if they stand to benefit from it with little effort.

If they can be made to feel important, they will come along with you even more easily. But do make sure you’re honest about importance.

Everybody questions every change at some stage or other.

Did you know?
I find odd facts enrich my life and encourage me to think. So I include them in this section.

Leather money was used in Russia until the 17th Century

Despite the huge population, China has only about 200 family names

Mexico once had three presidents in a single day

Quick Wins
It always helps to have available some effective short cuts

To make yourself feel good - smile.

It takes more muscles to smile than it does to frown

“When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you!”

Well obviously…
Some of the best “lights on” moments come when someone just resays a rule or states what is supposed to be evident for everyone. This section is just for them.

Commercial organisations are run to make money.

They aren’t there to provide jobs; they aren’t there for any social good and they aren’t there to extend our knowledge for its own sake.

They are there to make money.

And while many organisations are becoming more socially responsible and ethical while doing it, the number one priority is all about making money.

If you are employed by a commercial organisation, you are employed to help it to make money. If you don’t like the way it does this – it’s your responsibility to either change the way you view it or change your job.
